REFERENCES & PREPRODUCTION
INPIRATIONS
For this level, I wanted to start working on a passion project of mine I had been working visually on and off for some time. The project is called Berserk Ascension and my goal for it is to make a Beat Them All/Sidescroller/Roguelite. It is set in a dark fantasy viking world. For this level specifically here, I took inspirations from Icelandic landscapes along with some references from the game Thrine.
In my idea for this game, there would be at least 9 levels, for the 9 realms of the Norse Mythology. For this assignment, I would concentrate on the beginning. This level would be what could be the realm of Niflheim.
ASKING QUESTIONS
Something I like to do when preparing my ideas is to ask me some simple questions that I answer with concepts that will guide me through making my levels:
WHO◽WHEN◽WHERE◽WHAT◽WHY◽HOW
Here are the answers I gave myself to guide me:
WHO: Hermod. a dead warrior dad
WHEN: Viking Era (Fantasy)
WHERE: Helheim (Niflheim)
WHAT: Go to the Halls of Hell to make a deal with the Goddess
WHY: He needs to get to Valhalla before his son
HOW: Traversing Niflheim and defeating monsters (beat them all up!)
PLACES TO VISIT
After some research, I decided I would integrate 3 interesting areas in my level:
1. Nastrond | The Corpse Shore
2. Hvergelmir | The Boiling Spring
3. The Halls of Hel

"WOWING" THE PLAYER
In this level, I wanted to focus on interesting places to visit. I put a little extra efforts on making cool locations so you don't feel like you run through an empty level.
